After reading it, I consider 『Freewater』 to be the best book among Newbery-award winners. The novel is about the historical event of the 'maroon community,' which was formed by runaway slaves (source: https://slaveryandremembrance.org/articles/article/?id=A0060). The history depicted the cruelty of their lives, and the book accurately portrays this. Despite the horrors of their lives, the characters in the novel strive to find their own path. The author, Amina Luqman-Dawson, describes it beautifully. As readers, we get a glimpse of how miserable their lives were from a children's perspective, but there is always a sense of hope.

Homer's mother tries to escape with her children to the north or somewhere far from the Southerland, but she gets caught by Stokes. Luckily, the children were able to run away to a safe place. Homer and Ada eventually find refuge in Freewater, but they still miss their mother dearly.

I enjoyed watching all the children in this book grow and mature. Each character in the book had unique characteristics, some of which I felt were appropriate while others were not. However, this is reflective of the fact that all people are different and have different ways of growing and changing. The author did a great job of linking the characters' shortcomings to the events in the story, which contributed to their growth and development throughout the book. The story is excellent, and the deions are vivid. Despite the book's thickness, it kept me engaged, and I couldn't stop reading it. I highly recommend this book to all readers.

영어원서 독서모임 북커스에서는 매해 선정되는 뉴베리를 읽고 있다. 따끈따끈한 올해의 뉴베리를 읽는 게 좋을 때도 있고, 안 내킬 때도 있지만 올해만큼은 정말 잘했다 싶다. 책이 너무 두껍고, 표지도 크게 끌리지 않았다. (어쩌면 원서들의 표지를 안 좋아할지도) 하지만 첫 장을 넘기면서부터 뉴베리에서 흔하지 않은 심장이 쫄깃한 추격전에, 독특한 캐릭터들이 매력을 끌었다. 뒤로 갈수록 독자를 놓지 못하는 책이 잘 쓰여진 책이 아니던가. 이 책은 서서히 시동을 걸더니 3부로 넘어가서는 얼만큼 읽었다는 자각도 없이 완독하게 만든다. 게다가 각 꼭지 끊는 수준이 카페베네급. 묘사도 너무 좋고, 이야기를 이끌어가는 힘이 탄탄했다. 정말 이건 안 읽으면 안 된다!!!

저자는 미국 곳곳에 있었던 "maroon communities"에서 영감을 얻어 이 책을 썼다고 한다. 역사 속 대농장의 흑인 노예였던 이들이 탈출해서 만든 모임이다. 현재 이 공동체는 역사속 저항이라는 상징이 되었고, 미국 흑인들에게 큰 영향을 주었으리라 생각한다. 아이들의 시선으로 그 참혹함은 보여주되 얼마나 잔인할지 그려지면서도 담담히 응원하며 읽을 수 있게 한다. 노예로서의 삶, 그리고 탈출의 어려움과 그들만의 공동체에서 서로를 아끼며 다독이며 살아가는 모습들을 잘 보여준다.

각 꼭지가 다른 사람이 화자라 다양한 시선으로 읽을 수 있고, 두껍지만 짧게 끊어서 이끌어 가니 잘 읽힌다.

뉴베리의 가장 큰 묘미는 바로 아이들의 성장이다. 사실 '성장'이 인상의 큰 모토인 나로서는 이런 아이들이 잘 자라는 모습을 보는 것이 뉴베리를 읽는 이유라고 봐도 무방할 것 같다. 특히 Freewater에서는 아이들 하나 하나가 앞으로 성장할지가 분명히 보였고, 그걸 묘사하고 보여주는 장면들이 억지스럽지 않고 매끄럽게 사건들과 이어져서 응원하며 읽게 된다. 물론 모든 캐릭터를 좋아할 수는 없다. 그럼에도 그런 아이들도 성장하는 걸 보며 우리 아이들을 돌아볼 수 있고, 그들의 성장을 응원할 수 있게 되는 것 같다.

뉴베리가 그 나이대 아이들에게 어려울 수 있다는 평은 언제나 나온다. 아이들의 수준보다 문장이나 내용이 어려울 수 있다는 점이다. 하지만 뉴베리 장르를 단순 아동문학으로 치부하기에는 좋은 점이 너무 많다. 100년을 이어온 작품들이기에 그 중 자신의 생각과 취향, 그리고 성장을 도와줄 책은 반드시 있으리라 믿는다. 일단 내용상으로나 문장상으로 검증된 도서들이니 믿고 봐도 좋다. 뉴베리는 믿고 볼 일이다.
