뱀파이어는 신화적인 존재들로서 민속설화에선 동물과 사람의 피를 먹고서 살아간다. 공포장르의 하위장르이지만 뱀파이어 영화는 자기만의 독특한 스타일을 가지고 있으며, 이는 궁극적으로 1897년 브램 스토커가 발표한 [드라큐라]에 뿌리를 내리고 있다.

 

하지만, 뱀파이어는 남동 유럽에서 파생된 것으로 드라큐라가 가장 최초의 이야기는 아니다. 메소포타미안, 히브루, 로마 민속설화에도 고대부터 데몬과 유령이 생물체의 피를 마시고 향연을 연다는 내용을 찾을 수 있다.

 

영화제작자들은 여러가지 방법으로 뱀파이어 컬트를 해석했으며, 어떤 것들은 반신적인 원시적 본능을 강조하였고, 어떤 것들은 호러장르를 이끌어내는 도구로 사용했다. 예를 들면, Queen of the Damned에선 록스타와 같은 위치였으며, Fright Night에선 이웃, 그리고 Lifeforce에서 우주생명체, 그리고 Interview with the Vampire 에선 감성적인 귀족, From Dusk Till Dawn에선 범죄자였다.

 

여자 뱀파이어도 여러가지 형태로 묘사되었는데, Vampyros Lesbos 에선 아름다운 레즈비언으로 Vampyres and Rabid 에선 섹시하지만 호전적인 면으로. 에로티시즘과 유혹은 여자 뱀파이어에게 있어 가장 강조되는 며인데, 피를 빤다는 것은 쾌락과 맞닿아있다.

 

뱀파이어 코메디는 또다른 하부 장르로 대중문화면으로 좀 더 뱀파이어 설화를 조명한다. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 그리고 Blacula 그리고 Jesus Chris Vampire Hunter 는 공포에 떨지않고 차분히 팝콘을 먹으면서 봐도 되겠다 (여기선 조금 원문장을 바꿔보았음). 대부분 이런 영화들은 B급 쓰레기로 간주되지만, 조금씩 소수컬트팬을 양산한다.

F.W. Murnau뭩 German silent classic is the original and some say scariest Dracula adaptation, taking Bram Stoker뭩 novel and turning it into a haunting, shadowy dream full of dread. Count Orlok, the rodentlike vampire frighteningly portrayed by Max Schreck, is perhaps the most animalistic screen portrayal of a vampire ever filmed.

With the influence of producer and production designer Albin Grau, the film established one of two main depictions of film vampires. The 밡osferatu-type?is a living corpse with rodent features (especially elongated fingernails and incisors), associated with rats and plague, and neither charming nor erotic but rather totally repugnant. Hellsing follows Alucard and police girl-turned-vampire Seras Victoria as they exterminate the vampires and other creatures of the night for England뭩 Hellsing Organization. Hellsing is unique in that it takes much of itself from late 19th century and early 20th century Western fiction. It includes themes primarily from H. P. Lovecraft뭩 Cthulhu works and Bram Stoker뭩 Dracula, rolled together with some fast-paced action sequences. The main characters are part of the Hellsing organization, which may have been inspired by the Lovecraftian Miskatonic University뭩 Wilmarth Foundation, an organization formed for fighting demons and the undead.
