▶ 모든 전쟁을 끝내기 위한 전쟁(The war to end war, The war to end all wars)이란 은유적인 표현은 제1차 세계대전(World War I)(1914~1918)에 대한 냉소적인 비유입니다. 당시 그레이트 워(The Great War)라고 불렀던 세계대전 이후 불과 이십여 년 후에 제2차 세계 대전(Second World War)(1939~1945)이 발발했을 뿐 아니라, 사상자 또한 대폭 증대하였기 때문입니다. 허버트 조지 웰스(H. G. Wells)(1866~1946)는 전쟁이 발발한 1914년 8월부터 국제정세를 비롯한 전쟁칼럼을 연재하였고, 이를 묶어 단행본으로 출간하며 전쟁을 끝내기 위한 전쟁(The War That Will End War by H. G. Wells)(1914)이라 명명하였습니다.

▶ WHY BRITAIN WENT TO WAR. The cause of a war and the object of a war are not necessarily the same. The cause of this war was the invasion of Luxemburg and Belgium.
