(The Murders in the Rue Morgue)(1841) : (The Mystery Of Marie Roget)(1842)도 함께 만나실 수 있습니다.

가구(Philosophy Of Furniture), 예루살렘(A Tale Of Jerusalem), 스핑크스(The Sphinx), 악마(Never Bet The Devil Your Head) 등 에세이의 소재도 다양하거니와 시적 원리(The Poetic Principle)와 고대 영어시(Old English Poetry)와 같은 작가 특유의 창작론도 엿보실 수 있습니다. 시 또한 일반 시(Poems) 뿐 아니라 만년의 시(Poems Of Later Life), 성인기의 시(Poems Of Manhood), 유년의 시(Poems Of Youth) 등 시기별로 일목요연하게 정리되어 있습니다. ▶ PHILOSOPHY OF FURNITURE(1840). In the internal decoration, if not in the external architecture of their residences, the English are supreme. The Italians have but little sentiment beyond marbles and colours. In France, meliora probant, deteriora sequuntur?the people are too much a race of gadabouts to maintain those household proprieties of which, indeed, they have a delicate appreciation, or at least the elements of a proper sense. The Chinese and most of the eastern races have a warm but inappropriate fancy. The Scotch are poor decorists. The Dutch have, perhaps, an indeterminate idea that a curtain is not a cabbage. In Spain they are all curtains?a nation of hangmen. The Russians do not furnish. The Hottentots and Kickapoos are very well in their way. The Yankees alone are preposterous.

▶ THE SPHINX(1846). A favorite topic with me was the popular belief in omens?a belief which, at this one epoch of my life, I was almost seriously disposed to defend. On this subject we had long and animated discussions?he maintaining the utter groundlessness of faith in such matters,?I contending that a popular sentiment arising with absolute spontaneity?that is to say, without apparent traces of suggestion?had in itself the unmistakable elements of truth, and was entitled to as much respect as that intuition which is the idiosyncrasy of the individual man of genius.

▶ THE POETIC PRINCIPLE(1846). In speaking of the Poetic Principle, I have no design to be either thorough or profound. While discussing, very much at random, the essentiality of what we call Poetry, my principal purpose will be to cite for consideration, some few of those minor English or American poems which best suit my own taste, or which, upon my own fancy, have left the most definite impression. By “minor poems” I mean, of course, poems of little length. And here, in the beginning, permit me to say a few words in regard to a somewhat peculiar principle, which, whether rightfully or wrongfully, has always had its influence in my own critical estimate of the poem. I hold that a long poem does not exist. I maintain that the phrase, “a long poem,” is simply a flat contradiction in terms.
