1998년 [작가세계] 시 부문 신인상 수상. 왜 사는지, 그래서 사는 일에 합당한 답이 있는지, 살다보니 사는 거더라, 이런 무책임한 핑계로 버티는 일을 이해할 수 없어, 나에게 또 세상에 따져 묻던 시절에는, 시를 많이 썼다. 『과속방지턱을 베고 눕다』, 『포이톨로기』, 『밍글맹글』 이런 시집들을 낼 때까지 그랬다. 정신도 마음도 무거웠다. 소설을 쓰기 시작했다. 그냥 썼다. 장편 SF소설들이다. 『폴픽 Polar Fix Project』도 크고 작은 죽음 운운하며 많이 무거웠다.
몇몇 계기가 있었지만 무엇보다 날카로운 불연속점은 나이이다. 어느 날 훅, 나이가 내 몸 안에 쌓여있었다. 놀라운 일이었다. 몸이 무거워지자 정신이, 마음이 가벼워졌다. 세상과 적당히 주고받은 타협이 아니라 그냥 데면데면해진 것인데, 그러자 『몸으로 부르는 연가』처럼 날라리 같은 시도 쓰고 소설도 『뵐룽 아흐레』가 등장하며 훌쩍 가벼워졌다. 소설 『나와 트리만과』도 이런 연장선에 있달까?
그 사이에 과학에세이 『과학인문학』, 산문 『초능력 시인』 같은 글을 썼다. 그리고 『동네 시인이 그리고 쓴 느지감치 그림일기』를 그리고 쓰면서 더 가벼워졌다.
이제 지킬 것도 따질 것도 없어진 모양인데, 그래서 왜 사는지 알까?
