변응주는 1950년 한국전쟁 5816 유격부대 통신병으로서 한국전쟁에 참여했다. 5816 유격부대는 황해도 연백, 경기도 개성, 개풍 지역에 정확한 정보를 수집하기 위해 강화도에 유격대이다. 유격대는 미군 8086부대에 편입하고 8240부대, 8250부대로 재편성, 한국 육군에 편입되었다. KLO 첩보부대라고도 부른다. 그는 해방전부터 아모레 퍼시픽그룹(주)의 창업자인 서성환과 회사의 기틀을 만드는데 이바지하였다.
Eungzou Byun participated in the Korean War in 1950 as a signalman with the 5816th Guerrilla Unit. The 5816th Guerrilla Unit was a guerrilla unit based on Ganghwa Island, gathering accurate intelligence from the Yonbaek area in Hwanghae Province, and the Kaesong and Kaepung areas in Gyeonggi Province. The unit was incorporated into the US Army's 8086th Unit, reorganized into the 8240th and 8250th Units, and incorporated into the South Korean Army. It is also known as the KLO Intelligence Unit. Before liberation, he worked with Seonghwan Suh, founder of Amorepacific Corporation, to lay the foundation for the company.
