Daniel Defoe’s The King of Pirates is a historical adventure narrative likely written in the early 18th century, recounting the exploits of the notorious pirate captain Henry Avery. The story is presented as Avery’s own account, in which he seeks to refute the exaggerated and outlandish tales that have circulated about his life.
In the opening of the book, Avery dismisses the rumors surrounding him and declares his intent to tell the true story of his adventures. He specifically denies the widely circulated myths, such as his supposed marriage to a Mughal princess or the immense fortune he is said to have amassed, aiming instead to provide a more realistic portrayal of his life as a pirate.
The narrative traces his journey from working as a logwood cutter to ultimately becoming a pirate. Through detailed accounts of his adventures at sea, his encounters with other pirates, and his time in Madagascar, Avery reveals the brutal and perilous reality of a pirate’s existence. The early chapters establish both his character and the harsh world of piracy, laying the foundation for the thrilling episodes that follow.
