Rachel Vinrace embarks on a sea voyage aboard the Euphrosyne, leaving England for South America. Raised in a sheltered environment, she is introduced to new ideas through her aunt Helen Ambrose and fellow travelers. The voyage exposes her to intellectual discussions, romance, and social conventions she has never questioned before.
