The story begins with the deployment of the Irish Guards in 1914 as part of the British Expeditionary Force. They faced immediate action during the Retreat from Mons and later engagements at Villers-Cotterets and the Aisne. As they moved towards the Ypres Salient, the battalion endured intense fighting and trench warfare. Their role in the First Battle of Ypres marked a turning point, introducing them to the static brutality of war. Throughout 1915, the Guards participated in key actions like Neuve Chapelle and Festubert. Life in the trenches at Cuinchy and Laventie demanded resilience under unrelenting conditions. This phase forged the battalion’s identity through hardship, bravery, and discipline.
