The story resumes a decade after Twenty Years After, with D’Artagnan still loyal yet restless in his service to the crown. As he finally earns his long-awaited promotion, the narrative broadens to introduce the younger generation of courtiers and romantic intrigues at court. We meet Louise de La Valliere, whose gentle charm captures King Louis XIV’s attention. Meanwhile, palace rivalries brew as friendships and ambitions collide, especially among Malicorne, Manicamp, and the circle around Madame Henrietta. The tone alternates between sharp political observations and whimsical court scenes. Dumas deftly balances satire and suspense as the royal household becomes a stage of manipulation. The groundwork is laid for tension between personal loyalty and shifting power.
