버클리대학에서 수학전공, 매사추세츠공과대학에서 물리학 석박사 학위, 벨연구소를 거쳐 스탠포드 대학에서 응용물리학과 교수로 재직. 초등학교 교사로 재직중인 아니타 러플린 여사와의 슬하에 두아들을 두고있다. 2004년 7월 KAIST총장으로 취임했으며 2006년 7월 퇴임

1998년도 노벨 물리학상 수상자이자, 현재 한국과학기술원(KAIST)의 총장으로 재직 중인 로버트 러플린이 쓴 과학 이야기를 수록한 책이다. 기본적인 물리법칙에 대한 우리의 생각을 모두 바꿔야만 하는 이유와, 물리학의 가장 심오한 신비가 우주의 끝이 아니라 우리 손이 닿는 곳에 있는 이유를 설명해주고 있다.
