This book is the second instalment of the first full translation into English of the Kory?sa ch?ryo, the “Essentials of Kory? History,” which is our most important source for studying the history of the Kory? dynasty (918-1392). The Essentials of Kory? History was originally compiled in 1452. Although it contains basically the same information as the Kory?sa (History of Kory?), which was finished one year earlier in 1451, it is much more accessible. In the Kory?sa, information is spread out over three sections: annals, treatises on important subjects such as the bureaucracy or the economy, and biographies. In the Essentials of Kory? History by contrast all information is integrated into a chronological narrative, so that it can be read as a continuous history of Kory?.

This translation spans the years 1084 to 1146, from the reign of King S?njong (1083-1094) to the reign of King Injong (1122-1146). This unabridged translation of chapters 6 to 10 is the first full account of this crucial period in Korean history to be made available in English. Although intended primarily for students and researchers of Korean history, annotations that explain abstruse allusions and full translations of official titles make the work accessible to anyone interested in the history of medieval Korea.

이 책은 고려 왕조(918-1392)의 역사를 연구하는 데 가장 중요한 자료라고 할 수 있는『고려사절요』의 첫 영어 번역 중 제2부 입니다. 문종2년 즉 1452년에 완성된『고려사절요』의 내용은 이보다 한 해 앞서 완성된『고려사』와 기본적으 로 비슷하지만,『고려사』보다 접근성이 훨씬 더 좋다.『고려사』에서는 세 분야로 내용이 나뉘어 전개된다. 이는 편년체 를 원칙을 삼아 역사적 사실들 연대순으로 정리하는 세가, 관료제나 경제와 같은 중요한 주제를 소개하는 지, 그리고 주 요인물의 일대기를 다루는 전이다. 이와 대조적으로『고려사절요』에서는 모든 내용이 연대기적 서사에 통합되기 때문에 이는 고려의 연속적인 역사로 읽힐 수 있다.

이 번역은 선종(재위1083-1094)의 통치부터 인종(1122-1146)의 통치에 이르는 63년의 고려 역사를 다룬다. 이로써『고려사절요』권6~10의 완역으로 권1~5, 그리고 권11~23의 완역과 더불어 고려 건국부터 1313년 까지 모두 영어로 소개되고 있다. 이 번역은 한국사를 공부하는 학생과 연구자들 주된 대상으로 하지만, 난해한 표현을 설명하는 주석들과 제도명에 대한 완역 덕분에 고려사에 대한 관심을 갖는 이들 모두 활용할 수 있을 것이다.
