Tolstoy explains that the social system supporting violence convinces people that they choose it freely when in fact it arises from fear and habitual obedience, arguing that individuals who live according to love and non-resistance may be mocked or isolated yet possess the greatest power to transform society, rejecting the claim that nonviolence is impractical by showing that major historical change has always begun with a few conscientious individuals, and insisting that even when a person’s commitment to truth clashes with institutions, that struggle marks the moment of genuine inner freedom, concluding that the Kingdom of God is not an external authority but a moral awakening within the human heart.
