Boyhood begins with a slow, reflective journey and follows the protagonist as he gradually discovers new layers of emotion and perception while moving through family life, school days, changing seasons, and shifting relationships. In Moscow he wrestles with his admiration and rivalry toward his brother Volodya, his mixed feelings toward his father and grandmother, and a fragile self-awareness that wavers under the weight of his growing identity. His early experiences of affection, jealousy, guilt, and confusion?especially through his attachment to Masha?push him toward deeper introspection despite his immaturity. Listening to Karl Ivanitch’s life story, he comes to understand that adults too bear hidden pain and history, prompting him to see the world with widening clarity. Through small conflicts, missteps, and moments of revelation, he slowly grasps who he is becoming and advances from mere boyhood toward the beginning of an inner, self-defined existence.
