In his childhood Tommy is haunted by a strange recurring dream of a gigantic wave that rises endlessly yet never crashes, leaving him with a mixture of fear and fascination that follows him as he grows older. The wave gradually reveals itself as more than a nightmare and becomes a symbolic reflection of deeper emotional currents shaping his inner life. As he matures he encounters powerful feelings and experiences the awakening of love, particularly through his growing attachment to a girl named Lettice Aylmer. Sensations connected with the dream such as mysterious scents and watching eyes blur the boundary between imagination and reality and intensify his sense that the dream carries hidden meaning. This part traces Tommy’s early psychological awakening and prepares the ground for a deeper understanding of the strange vision that has followed him since childhood.
