George Bernard Shaw’s “Arms and the Man” is a comedy first performed in 1894 set during the Serbo-Bulgarian War where the idealistic young woman Raina encounters the pragmatic Swiss mercenary Bluntschli which challenges her romantic illusions about war and heroism. Raina initially admires her heroic fiance but Bluntschli presents a realistic view of war focused on survival which disrupts her beliefs. As the story unfolds the characters confront the gap between idealism and reality revealing hypocrisy and social pretensions. Through wit and satire the play exposes the absurdity of war and the contradictions of human nature leading to unexpected changes in relationships and understanding.
