This part moves from Restoration theatre to Augustan poetry and prose, Georgian poetry and prose, the great novelists, the Romantic movement, later Georgian fiction, poets after Wordsworth, late Victorian poets and novelists, and historians, showing the broad development of modern English literature. After the age of satire and reason, Romanticism brings feeling, nature, imagination, and the inner life to the foreground. Later fiction grows into a powerful form for examining society and human psychology, while Victorian and late Victorian writing combines history, criticism, philosophy, realism, and artistic experiment.
