Jack Carleton and Otto Relstaub leave home to recover a lost horse but soon find themselves caught in a series of dangerous adventures across the wilderness after being captured by Native Americans. As they cross forests, rivers, and mountains in desperate attempts to survive, the mysterious Shawanoe youth Deerfoot returns to help them, gradually building trust and friendship across cultural boundaries. Repeated escapes, unexpected encounters, and difficult decisions continually test the courage and determination of the young travelers while expanding the scope of their journey. The first half focuses on survival, pursuit, growing friendship, and the beginning of a deeper understanding between the frontier settlers and Deerfoot.
