A Workplace Korean Textbook for International Learners Preparing to Work in Korea
Learn Practical Expressions and Korean Workplace Culture Through Daniel’s Day
BUSINESS KOREAN: A Day in the Life of Daniel Working in Korea is a workplace Korean textbook for international learners seeking employment or already working in Korea. Following Daniel, an international new hire at a Korean company, the book covers Korean expressions used on the job alongside workplace culture. English translations and explanations accompany the Korean dialogues, vocabulary, language patterns, and cultural and workplace tips.
The book comprises 12 units organized around the course of a workday, from arrival to departure. Topics include arriving at work, sending emails, communicating with managers and colleagues, preparing for meetings, lunchtime, making phone calls, giving presentations and exchanging opinions in meetings, working outside the office, overtime, and leaving work. Dialogues featuring Daniel, who is from Australia, and his colleagues illustrate how expressions are used in different situations and with different people.
The email unit covers subject lines, greetings, message bodies, closing remarks, and signatures, as well as expressions for requesting information and replying. The telephone unit introduces ways to ask to speak to someone, leave a message, and pass along information. The meeting units cover describing sales figures and research findings, expressing opinions, and explaining reasons. The Culture / Work Tip sections address forms of address, nunchi-the ability to read social cues-relationships among employees who joined at the same time, office messaging etiquette, dining customs, reporting to managers, overtime, and work-life balance.
Each unit progresses through comprehension checks, vocabulary exercises, sentence-pattern practice, and activities that apply expressions to specific situations. The exercises encourage learners to use the material in speaking and writing, and an answer key is included at the back. For both independent study and classroom use, the introductory guide outlines a suggested course of approximately six hours per unit, totaling 72 hours over 14-16 weeks. Teaching hours can be adjusted at the instructor’s discretion.
