The three stories represented here, “The Camellias,” “The Scorching Heat,” and “A Wanderer in the Valleys,” all reveal the author's mastery of the peculiar flavor of colloquial dialect as well as his commanding perspicuity into the charms of crude yet unaffected characteristics of peasants. His stories, full of unsentimental pathos and humor, superbly maintain the comic spirit that laughs in the face of life’s dire conditions. The author’s depiction of the struggles of the indigent in a dark and bleak social environment functions as a foil for blunt beauty of his characters’ simple and caring hearts.
