프레드릭 코플스턴
말보로(Marlborough) 대학과 옥스퍼드 대학교의 성 요한 대학(St. John’s College)을 졸업하고, 1929년 로마에 있는 교황청 직속 신학교 그레고리오(Gregorian) 대학교에서 철학박사 학위를 받았다. 1925년 그리스도교에 입문하여, 1930년 예수회 회원이 되었고, 1937년 신부 서품을 받았다. 1939년부터 1969년까지 런던 대학교 철학과 교수로 재직했으며, 1970년에서 1974년까지 헤이드롭(Heythrop)대학교의 학장을 지내고, 런던 대학교의 명예교수로 있다가 1994년 2월 영국 런던에서 별세했다. 그의 주요 저서는 다음과 같다.

철학사 전체를 놓고 볼 때는 플라톤철학이 꼭 짚고 넘어가야 할 문지방이라면, 근대 이후의 철학에서는 칸트철학이 그 위치를 차지한다고 할 수 있다. 때문에 칸트를 공부한다는 것은 근대와 현대를 소통하는 통일의 발판이 될 것이다. 그 동안 출간된 어느 서적보다도 코플스턴의 이 책은 정평이 나 있는 책이기에 칸트를 이해하는 데 커다란 도움이 될 것이다.
